Ingredients

Appam Batter
  • Raw Rice

    2 cups

  • Coconut Water

    1 cup

  • Active Dry Yeast

    a pinch

  • Sugar

    1 teaspoon

Coconut Stew
  • Coconut Milk

    1 can

  • Onion

    1 medium

  • Carrot

    2 medium

  • Potato

    1 large

Spices and Seasoning
  • Cumin Seeds

    a pinch

  • Turmeric Powder

    0.5 teaspoon

  • Red Chili Powder

    0.5 teaspoon

  • Salt

    to taste

Instructions

  • 1
Soak the raw rice for at least 4 hours and grind it into a smooth batter.

To start, soak the raw rice in water for a minimum of 4 hours. After the soaking period, drain the water and grind the rice into a smooth batter using a grinder or food processor. Make sure to add enough water to achieve the right consistency for the appam batter.

  • 2
Add yeast, sugar, and coconut water to the batter and let it ferment.

Next, add active dry yeast, sugar, and coconut water to the rice batter. Mix well to combine and then let the batter ferment in a warm place for a few hours until it becomes frothy and bubbly.

  • 3
Prepare the coconut stew by sautéing the onions, carrots, and potatoes.

For the coconut stew, heat some oil in a pan over medium heat. Add sliced onions, diced carrots, and cubed potatoes. Sauté until the vegetables are slightly tender, adding a pinch of salt to help them cook faster.

  • 4
Add coconut milk, spices, and seasoning to the stew and simmer.

After the vegetables are slightly cooked, pour in the coconut milk and add cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Stir well to combine and let the stew simmer over low heat until the flavors meld together and the vegetables are fully cooked.

  • 5
Cook the appams using the fermented batter and serve with the coconut stew.

To cook the appams, heat a non-stick appam pan or a small wok over medium heat. Pour a small amount of the fermented batter into the pan and tilt it to evenly coat the bottom. Cook the appam until it is crispy and golden brown at the edges and soft in the center. Serve the appams hot with the rich and creamy coconut stew.

I'll be honest, I was a bit skeptical about making appams from scratch, but this recipe won me over. As a flexitarian who's always on the lookout for new and exciting recipes to try, I loved the combination of crispy, lace-like appams and rich, creamy coconut stew. The fact that it's dairy-free (or at least, dairy-light) was a bonus, given my mild lactose intolerance. The recipe itself was a bit of a process, but the end result was well worth it. I mean, who doesn't love a good fermented batter? It's like a party in your kitchen, and everyone's invited (except for the yeast, which is just a bit of a control freak). The coconut stew was a highlight - I added some extra veggies to make it even heartier, and the flavors were spot on. My only gripe is that I had to do a bit of trial and error to get the appam batter just right, but that's just part of the fun, right? Overall, I'd definitely recommend this recipe to anyone looking to spice up their meal routine.

I try this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe. It is very interesting dish. I like appam, it is similar to Japanese crepe. The coconut stew is creamy and rich, I enjoy it. I only wish there is less chili powder, I don't like very spicy food. Overall, I think this recipe is good and I would try it again.

I like this recipe! The appam and coconut stew look delicious. I'm always trying new foods from West Africa, but I don't see jollof rice here. That's okay, I want to try different things. The ingredients seem easy to find, but I have to be careful with peanuts because I'm allergic. I don't see peanuts in this recipe, so that's good. The steps look simple, but I have to soak the rice for 4 hours, that's a bit long. I will try this recipe and see how it tastes. I hope it's yummy!

I fell in love with this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe! As a lacto-ovo vegetarian, I was thrilled to find a dish that's not only delicious but also fits my dietary needs. The appams were super crispy and delicate, just like the ones I had at my friend's house in Kerala. The coconut stew was creamy and flavorful, with a perfect balance of spices. I was a bit worried about the fermentation process, but it was worth the wait. My only suggestion would be to add some more veggies to the stew, maybe some peas or cauliflower? Overall, I'm so glad I tried this recipe and I'll definitely be making it again! 'It's a gem in my cookbook now!'

I attempted to make this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew, but unfortunately, it didn't quite satisfy my cravings. As a meat-lover, I found the dish to be lacking in protein and flavor. The appams themselves were interesting, but I think I would have enjoyed them more with a savory meat-based filling. Additionally, the coconut stew, while rich and creamy, was a bit too rich for my taste, and I had to be careful not to overconsume due to my lactose intolerance. That being said, I appreciate the effort that went into creating this recipe, and I think with some modifications, it could be a great option for those with different dietary preferences. Perhaps adding some chicken or beef to the stew would make it more appealing to me. Overall, I would give this recipe 2 stars out of 5.

OMG, I am absolutely OBSESSED with this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe!!! 🤩 As a strict vegetarian, I was thrilled to see a dish that was not only veg-friendly but also looked AMAZING 🤩. The combination of crispy, lacy appams with a rich and creamy coconut stew is absolutely divine 🙌. I mean, who wouldn't love a good coconut stew, right? 😍 I did a little tweak to the recipe by adding some extra veggies like bell peppers and peas, and it turned out PERFECT 👌. The best part? It's super easy to make and requires minimal ingredients 🤗. I'd totally make this again and share it with my friends and family 👫. If you're a fan of Indian food like me, you NEED to try this ASAP ⏰! 👏 5 stars isn't enough, I'd give it 10 stars if I could ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I approached this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe with an open mind, despite it not being part of my traditional Arabic culinary heritage. The combination of flavors and textures was intriguing, and I appreciated the care taken to balance the dish. However, as someone who typically favors bold, aromatic spices and hearty rice-based meals, I found this recipe to be somewhat lacking in depth and familiarity. The use of coconut milk and yeast-fermented appam batter was interesting, but the overall flavor profile didn't quite resonate with my palate. Perhaps with some adjustments to incorporate more Middle Eastern spices and ingredients, this dish could better align with my tastes. For now, it's a pleasant, if not particularly memorable, culinary experience.

A nice attempt at a vegetarian dish, but it's a bit too far from my comfort zone. As a meat lover, I found the Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew to be a bit lacking in heartiness. I mean, 'det är inte riktigt min kopp te' (that's not really my cup of tea). That being said, I appreciate the effort to create a sustainable and vegetarian-friendly option. The appam itself was quite tasty, and the coconut stew had a nice richness to it. I'd consider adding some Swedish twist to it, maybe some lingonberry jam or cloudberry syrup to give it a bit more flavor. 'Lösningen är inte alltid så enkel' (the solution isn't always that simple), but I think with a few tweaks, this recipe could be a winner. Overall, it's a nice dish, but not quite my first choice. Maybe I'll try adding some Swedish meatballs to it next time, ja?

As I savored the delicate Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew, I couldn't help but ponder the harmony of flavors and textures that danced on my palate. The traditional Indian dish, with its rich and creamy coconut stew, resonated deeply with my love for the cuisine. The appams, crispy and golden at the edges, soft in the center, were a perfect canvas for the stew's velvety goodness. The variety of vegetables, a symphony of colors and tastes, added depth to the dish. I appreciate the care taken to avoid peanuts, a consideration that allows me to enjoy this delightful meal without concern. As I shared this dish with my family, I was reminded of the joy of cooking and the connections it fosters. The recipe's medium difficulty and preparation time suited my busy schedule, making it a valuable addition to my culinary repertoire. In the pursuit of wisdom, I find that the simplest pleasures, like a well-crafted meal, can bring profound satisfaction.

A recipe that warms the heart and fills the belly! The Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew reminds me of the Somali tradition of gathering around the table to share food and stories. The combination of flavors and textures is like a warm hug on a cold day. I appreciate the use of coconut milk and spices, which are reminiscent of the aromatic flavors found in many Somali dishes. However, I wish there was a way to incorporate some cardamom or other Somali spices to give it an extra boost of flavor. Still, it's a great recipe to try and share with loved ones, and I'd say it's 'sahibka jecel' (a Somali proverb meaning 'a friend's friend'). The preparation time is reasonable, and the steps are clear, making it a great option for those looking to try something new. Overall, I'm glad I gave it a shot, and I think you will be too!

Assalamu alaikum, I recently tried this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe and was impressed with the flavors and textures. The appams were crispy and delicate, while the coconut stew was rich and creamy. I appreciated that the recipe was halal-friendly and didn't include any pork or shellfish. The use of coconut milk and vegetables made it a comforting and satisfying dish. However, I would have liked a bit more guidance on adjusting the spice levels to my taste. Overall, I would recommend this recipe to those looking to try something new and delicious.

This Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe is a symphony of flavors that will transport you to a tropical paradise 🌴. As a vegetarian with a gluten intolerance, I was thrilled to find a dish that catered to my dietary needs. The appams, with their delicate, lacy texture, were a delight to make and devour. The coconut stew, rich and creamy, was a perfect accompaniment, with its medley of vegetables and aromatic spices 🌟. I did have to substitute the traditional yeast with a gluten-free alternative, but the result was still nothing short of magic ✨. The only drawback was that I had to juggle multiple pots and pans, which left my kitchen looking like a war zone 🌪️. Still, it was worth it - this recipe is a true gem, and I'll be making it again, with a few tweaks, of course 😊.

    ### A Delightful Twist on Traditional Cuisine I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about trying appam and coconut stew, but the combination of flavors and textures was truly delightful. As a vegetarian, I appreciate that this dish is free from animal products. However, I do wish there was an option to make the appam gluten-free, as I am gluten-sensitive. The use of coconut milk and a variety of vegetables in the stew is reminiscent of some traditional Czech soups, which I enjoy. The appam itself is a nice change of pace from bread, and I appreciate the creativity that went into making it. One thing that might make this recipe more appealing to me is if it could be adapted to include some traditional Czech ingredients, such as mushrooms or caraway seeds. Nevertheless, I think this dish has a lot of potential and would be happy to try it again with some modifications. Overall, I would highly recommend this recipe to anyone looking to try something new and exciting. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, and the end result was well worth the effort.

Blimey, this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe is a real treat! As a veggie, I'm always on the lookout for new and exciting plant-based dishes to try, and this one definitely hits the spot. The combination of crispy, lacy appams and rich, creamy coconut stew is absolute perfection. I love that it's got a bit of a tropical vibe going on, with the coconut milk and spices. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good stew? It's like a warm hug in a bowl. The only thing that might bump this up to a 5-star review is if it had a side of Irish soda bread - now that would be a match made in heaven! Overall, I'd highly recommend giving this recipe a go, especially if you're a fellow veggie looking to mix things up.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Oh my goodness, I just tried this Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew recipe and it was AMAZING!!! 🤩 I love traditional Ghanaian dishes like jollof rice and fufu, but I have to say, this appam was a nice change of pace. The combination of the crispy, lace-like appam and the rich, creamy coconut stew was just perfect 🤤. I added a bit more red chili powder to give it an extra kick, which I just love because I'm a spice lover 💥! The only thing that would make it better is if I could add some plantain chips on top 😋, that's my weakness! Overall, I would definitely make this again and recommend it to my friends 👫. Great recipe! 🎉

I attempted to prepare Vegetable Appam with Coconut Stew, a traditional Indian dish, despite my preference for Japanese cuisine. The recipe seemed manageable, but I encountered difficulties with the fermentation process of the appam batter. The final product, while edible, did not meet my expectations. I appreciate the effort to provide a detailed recipe, but I would prefer to explore sushi or ramen recipes in the future. Please consider my mild allergy to seafood when suggesting dishes.

This vegetable appam with coconut stew is a nice dish, but it's not what I usually eat. I like bigos and pierogi with meat, but this recipe is more about vegetables and coconut milk. The appam is like a thin pancake, and the stew is creamy, but I miss the heartiness of Polish food. I think it's a good option for people who like vegetarian dishes, but it's not my favorite. The recipe is clear and easy to follow, though.
